When I got to Snow Hill, I turned just past the Piggly-Wiggly and headed south a few more miles, first on Hull Road, then on Wheat Swamp Road, until I reached my destination, a historically tri-racial community– black, white, and Indian– that is called Browntown.

As I burn the midnight oil here at Mama Hardy's, I have been thinking back on the day: my visit with Ignacia and her dad in Browntown, our trip to the Indian graveyard, the stories that Ms. Ida told me here in Institute, even my dreamy, joyous supper at the Mexican food truck in Snow Hill. I can't help saying-- these are the kinds of days I live for.
