This morning I had the great pleasure of attending the 17th Annual Montford Point Marines Day Ceremony at Camp Gilbert H. Johnson here in Jacksonville, N.C. Every summer the event honors the first African American men to serve in the United States Marine Corps.

Travels Along the Cape Fear– Last Stop: Bald Head Island
This morning I am at the mouth of the Cape Fear. I can see "Old Baldy," the island's lighthouse, just down the road here and, beyond the inlet, the Oak Island Light. Across the way is Cape Fear, Frying Pan Shoals and the Atlantic.

I thought the session was a work of genius. I know it was probably just another day for both Carolina Ocean Studies and Carolina K-12-- they are used to pulling rabbits out of hats. But for me it was a wonder to behold, and getting to work with my brother Richard and my sister-in-law Sandie made the day even more special.

Mike was, as always, magical. I can never take my eyes off him when he is performing. At times, he wandered through the audience, really making us feel as if Abraham Galloway had come back to life and was walking among us. We could feel history's breath on us.

Jamil Rashad has a passion for denim. He wears it, he studies its history, he collects it, he designs clothes made from it, and he sells it at Westdale Vintage in Fayetteville, N.C. I don't think there is anything about denim that doesn't interest him. And that is what led him to me.
