This morning I am at the mouth of the Cape Fear. I can see "Old Baldy," the island's lighthouse, just down the road here and, beyond the inlet, the Oak Island Light. Across the way is Cape Fear, Frying Pan Shoals and the Atlantic.

In the autumn of 1938, the photographer Charles Farrell visited a gang of mullet fishermen from Varnamtown while they hauled their nets on Bald Head Island, down in the far southeast corner of the North Carolina coast.
